KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

The start of the heating season is not the time to buy firewood but in case this is your situation, we're here to support you. Most firewood dealers sell green, or freshly cut, wood, which could have a moisture content of 100% or more (100% moisture content means half the weight of the wood is water). In many areas, you can buy seasoned or kiln-dried wood, but you'll pay a premium for it. It's important to burn only wood with moisture content below 20%. Burning wood with higher moisture content creates more smoke, which contains harmful chemicals and particulates and forms creosote on your chimney. It also gives you less heat, because it takes energy to boil off the excess water. That means wasted money. At Grand View Firewood Co,, you can rest easy knowing we offer 20% and below moisture content seasoned firewood.

It's a good idea to buy your wood at least one whole season ahead. If properly stacked, in an area of relatively low relative humidity, many species of wood will drop to a moisture content below 20% within a year; some species, such as oak, however, can take two years or more of air drying. By purchasing your firewood at least a year ahead of time, you'll be working with firewood that's been seasoned to some extent and you will be closer to always having dry wood at your fingertips.

HOW MANY CORDS OF WOOD DO I NEED?

We often get this question. Our answer is this – it depends. Amounts will vary based on how well your home is insulated, how efficient your wood-burning stove or fireplace might be, and your planned use. Just remember that having extra is better than running out!

One face cord of wood is a pile that’s 4’ x 4’ x 8’, packed pretty tight. Let’s say you have a modest-sized house, around 2000 square feet. It’s well-insulated with newer windows and an efficient wood stove or fireplace. You plan to burn your wood exclusively for heat (not cooking) and as your primary source of warmth, except on unusually frigid days. In this scenario, you’d likely be all set with four cords of wood. Since this is just one situation, feel free to adjust based on your actual square footage and burn needs. We're happy to help guide you with any questions you may have regarding usage and an appropriate amount of wood for your specific usage.

FIREWOOD STORAGE
Brown Wood_edited.jpg

What is the best way to store firewood outside?
Firewood is best stored outside. It should be stored neatly, with the outside of the wood exposed to the air. If possible, you should place the wood on top of plastic sheeting or in a wooden log store. Avoid tree cover if possible and don’t leave the logs in a heap.

Does firewood need to be covered?

Firewood should remain uncovered so it can be properly dried. However, this is not always possible, especially during the winter months where ice, snow and rain can wreak havoc with firewood storage.

With this in mind, you should invest in a good cover to place over the top of your woodpile that will protect it from the elements when needed.

Can you store firewood on the ground?

As a general rule, firewood should always be stored off the ground to allow for proper ventilation. A great option is to store your wood on a wooden pallet.

Is it OK to store firewood in a garage?

If your logs are already dry, it’s fine to store them in a garage. If they’re not dry, there won’t be enough fresh or flowing air to help them dry out in a garage environment.

Is it OK to stack firewood next to a house?

All firewood should be stored around 20 feet away from the nearest door to your house. If you’re planning on stacking wood next to a structure, you should always make sure that it is a few inches away from the structure to optimise airflow.
